Renaissance Promo Art

An artwork that would be used as one of the campaign pieces to help promote Renaissance, the charity event conceptualized by Filipino comic book superstars Whilce Portacio and Philip Tan with Metro Comic-Con organizer Hobbylink Productions that would benefit the victims of Typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng in the Philippines. The event will be the largest gathering of Filipino Professional Artists in the field of animation and comic books. The coffee table book of the same title will also be launched at the event, featuring artworks from 60 artists of the past, present and future such as Tony De Zuniga (Jonah Hex co-creator), Rico Rival (Transformers G1 storyboard artist), Bobby Rubio (Up), Carlo Pagulayan (Agents of Atlas), Stephen Segovia (Wolverine), Harvey Tolibao (Psylocke), The Luna Brothers (Girls), Francis Manapul (Flash), Whilce (Image United), Philip (Batman and Robin), and Leinil Yu (Secret Invasion). The original pieces contributed by the artists will also be auctioned.

I was asked to come up with a piece in the middle of another artwork I was working on, so I hope the lay out and concept I thought of would work. It was also kind of quickly done, and having it washed with watercolour was unplanned, otherwise I would’ve drawn it on a watercolour paper instead of regular vellum. This artwork features Darna, undeniably the most popular super-heroine in the Philippines. Created by the late great Mars Ravelo in the 40’s, she has appeared in too many full-length movies, and several TV series. Next to her is my character, Unstoppable.
